Mărțișor · a thread for spring
Living tradition · practices associated with 1 March
The exhibit
Red and white threads are made, offered and worn in springtime practices shared across Romania and neighbouring countries.
A small cord can carry a greeting, a wish and the promise of another season. Mărțișor belongs to practices associated with the first of March, passed between people as well as generations. The multinational heritage recognized by UNESCO connects Romania with Bulgaria, the Republic of Moldova and North Macedonia, while leaving room for local ways of making and giving.
