Mechanical torque converter
George Constantinescu
The idea
Constantinescu developed a mechanical converter that varied transmitted torque automatically as resistance changed.
A 1927 SAE engineering paper explains the mechanism through oscillation and inertia. This was Constantinescu’s particular mechanical design, rather than the invention of every form of automatic transmission.
