The exhibit
Herodotus describes beliefs about Zalmoxis among the Getae, offering an influential but external account of an ancient religious world.
The voice that reaches us is a Greek writer’s. In Book Four of the Histories, Herodotus associates the Getae with beliefs about death and Zalmoxis, whose name also appears as Salmoxis. His account became an important starting point for later discussions of religion north of the Danube. Reading it means hearing both a reported tradition and the perspective of its narrator.
