Phrase-based machine translation

The idea

An international team including Romanian researcher Daniel Marcu developed a patented model that translates sequences of words using statistical probabilities.

A phrase can carry context that a single word misses. The European Patent Office credits Marcu and his collaborators with a translation model that works on word sequences. The exhibit recognizes a Romanian contribution within an international team, rather than assigning the invention of machine translation to one country.
