Anghel Saligny
Saligny’s legacy lies in original structural solutions applied to the bridges and ports that connected a developing economy.
A life behind the work
Saligny studied in Focșani, Potsdam and Berlin before completing technical training at Charlottenburg. Returning to Romania in 1876, he worked on railways and developed a career designing bridges, docks and port facilities. His projects at Brăila and Galați used original solutions for grain silos made with prefabricated reinforced-concrete elements. He also directed the celebrated Fetești–Cernavodă railway crossing of the Danube. Alongside construction, he taught bridge engineering and helped organise the profession. He served as president of the Romanian Academy from 1907 to 1910.
