Prefabricated concrete grain silos
Anghel Saligny
The idea
Saligny developed original silo-construction solutions using prefabricated reinforced-concrete elements at Brăila and Galați.
The Romanian Academy records original solutions for the ports’ docks and grain silos. This exhibit focuses on the prefabricated reinforced-concrete construction method, showing how structural engineering transformed the handling and storage of grain.
A life behind the work · 1854–1925
Anghel Saligny
Saligny studied in Focșani, Potsdam and Berlin before completing technical training at Charlottenburg. Returning to Romania in 1876, he worked on railways and developed a career designing bridges, docks and port facilities. His projects at Brăila and Galați used original solutions for grain silos made with prefabricated reinforced-concrete elements. He also directed the celebrated Fetești–Cernavodă railway crossing of the Danube. Alongside construction, he taught bridge engineering and helped organise the profession. He served as president of the Romanian Academy from 1907 to 1910.
