The andesite disc
Sarmizegetusa Regia · a monument in the sacred area
The exhibit
The circular stone monument commonly called the Andesite Sun survives among the remains of Sarmizegetusa Regia’s sacred area.
A circle of stone draws the eye toward its centre. Known today as the Andesite Sun, this monument forms part of the archaeological landscape of Sarmizegetusa Regia. Its striking radial arrangement has encouraged many interpretations. The surviving structure can be described and studied even where its original meaning cannot be recovered with certainty.
