STED fluorescence microscopy
Stefan Hell and collaborators
The idea
STED uses controlled fluorescence to distinguish details smaller than the conventional diffraction limit of light microscopy.
Born in Arad, Stefan Hell developed the STED concept while working abroad. His work with Jan Wichmann set out the method in 1994; experimental development followed. The invention belongs to an international scientific effort that helped earn Hell a share of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
