The idea

Basgan patented a rotary well-drilling apparatus that combined rotation with longitudinal vibrations.

US patent 2,103,137 describes changes to the drill string, its weighting and the supply of drilling fluid. Granted in 1937, it records Basgan’s effort to improve the efficiency and direction of oil-well drilling.
