The Hurmuzescu electroscope

The idea

Hurmuzescu developed an electroscope using a metal enclosure and strong electrical insulation to improve electrostatic measurements.

Measuring a small electric charge requires protecting it from interference and leakage. Hurmuzescu presented his instrument in 1894. The Romanian Academy’s history committee describes the metal enclosure and dielectrine insulation that distinguished his design.
