The idea
Teclu redesigned a laboratory gas burner’s air supply to produce a hotter flame.
A controlled flame is an everyday scientific tool. The Virtual Gas Museum dates Teclu’s design to 1892 and explains its altered air supply. The inventor’s contribution was this particular burner design, rather than the invention of all laboratory burners.
